Youth Court

Youth Court

Looking after a vulnerable young person in trouble takes calmness, tact and empathy as well as the legal knowledge required to assist the young person through the difficult and often frightening journey that is the youth justice system. A conviction at an early age can have a devasting effect on the rest of a young person’s life and it is vital that they are advised from a very early stage of proceedings. We have a number of extremely experienced advocates who specialise in youth court cases and will be happy to assist you.

It may seem odd but the Youth Court has greater sentencing powers that the Magistrates Court and can actually sentence a young person to youth custody for up to 2 years. This inevitably means that very serious matters like serious violence and sexual offences can be tried in the Youth Court.

Sentencing and remand options are very different as are the proceedings themselves as the court engages directly with the young person as well as parents even after being addressed by your young persons advocate.
